Working From the Middle of Nowhere: Starlink Life

6 min read · Free and open · From the road

The strangest sentence in the fleet is take the call, we're at the glacier. Every truck runs Starlink, and it changes who can take these trips: the two-week expedition stops costing two weeks of vacation.

What it's actually like

Fast enough for video calls, cloud drives, and uploading the day's photos while dinner cooks. The dish deploys in minutes at camp, power comes off the lithium bank, and the 12 volt system barely notices. Trees are the enemy, so camp selection sometimes includes the phrase good sky, which is a very Skybreaker problem to have.

The working rhythm

People settle into it fast: drive the morning, camp early, work the afternoon window, close the laptop when the light goes sideways. Time zones become a tool: BC mornings are east coast afternoons, so the inbox is dying down right as the road opens up.

The off switch

The best feature is that it has one. Fully connected or fully ignored, your call, and plenty of guests use it only for the weather forecast and one triumphant photo to the family chat. Both lifestyles are supported. The 102 on antenna placement, power draw, and bandwidth planning lives in the membership vault.
